A New Dawn

With my departure to the shores of Lake Ontario there is a new team in place to continue on with the 2870 Biathlon program.

Maj Babin has taken the helm of the team with Capt Miller RSO as RSO.

The future of this website is up in the air while is it determined if it will be migrated to 2870armycadets.ca or simply archived. Until that time, you will still find valuable information within its pages.

Remember to join the 2870 Biathlon Development Team Facebook group if you are a new member or you simply didn't get around to it last season.

New Biathlon Awards Handed Out at Annual

Two new biathlon awards were unveiled at this weekend's Annual Review.

MWO Esteban Sanchez-Maya was awarded the new "Lt(N) J.D. Wright, CD Top Biathlete" award and Sgt Chris Hoffmann received the new "Most Improved Biathlete" award.

These presentations are bittersweet in that this was my last official duty as coach of the 2870 Biathlon Development Team.

EOA Is Heading to Nationals Again

The Eastern Ontario Area biathlon team will have its largest representation on Team Ontario for the National Cadet Biathlon Championships being held at Valcartier, Québec in March. Four cadets have advanced from Orleans, Casselman and Cartier Square.

Esteban Sanchez-Maya placed 11th in his Mass Start category with an actual runtime of 53:03.3 and knocking seven plates down. The top time in the Youth males was 38:13.7 with 13 plates down. The mass start consists of 5 loops of skiing with 4 bouts of shooting with a total distance of 8.5 km.

The male relay composite teams place third and forth in their standings. MWO Sanchez-Maya's team placed 4th with a total runtime of 1:17:23.4.

Competition Results Are Now Available

I want to congratulate the competition team for an excellent perfomance this weekend at the EOA Biathlon Championships.

Esteban Sanchez-Maya skied away with the bronze medal in the Youth Male category and earned a spot at the Regional Championships at Sault Ste. Marie in February.

The male relay team, consisting of team captain Curtis Johnson, Esteban Sanchez-Maya and Ross Tansey, earned the Bronze medal.

Some quick facts:

  • Megan Segstro shot down eight plates out of ten, the best of the competition.
  • Blair Edwards increased his placing from 20th last season to 10th this season
  • Ross Tansey placed in the top ten of his category
  • Despite being on skis for only the second time this season Lianna Jones placed in the top half of her category
  • Sarah Knight's extra practice during the past couple weeks really helped nail the hills and allowed her to finish in the middle of the pack.

Each and every one of you should be proud of your accomplishments. You have done the corps and I proud.

The competition results can be found at http://www.jafspar.ca/2870biathlon/results/2013/results-2013-area.html.

Quick note to everyone...you can hang on to your equipment until after I get back from Provincials. Take advantage of the snow and continue to work on your skills to prep for next season.

Finalized Itinerary Posted

The finalized schedule is posted on the competition page. You need to be at the corps NLT 0600 hrs. We will be leaving for Camp Fortune by 0630. Lunch and supper will be provided but do not forget to pack healthy snacks.

Awards ceremony will be at the drill hall approximately 1900 hrs after we have eaten supper at the mess. Parents are more than welcome to attend.

Parents are welcome to watch the racing at Camp Fortune. Keep in mind that parking may be at a premium and the racing starts at 1000 hrs, temperature and wind chill depending.

Cadets are reminded to bring in their equipment Wednesday evening so I can wax them Friday evening. In lieu of the temperatures this week I am strongly encouraging that any cardio training be done inside and limit the exposure outside. Stretches are a must as well as plenty of rest. If you have the equipment to wax your skis then you do not need to bring them in but I need to know.

I mentioned to some that I will be at Connaught Thursday evening. This will not be the case so please bring in your gear Wednesday evening and leave it in QM (remember with your name on it). If you will not be in or you forget your gear I will be at Connaught after 2130 hrs Friday evening.

Last but not least, you need to have your OHIP card before you board the bus so don't forget it.

Getting Down to the Crunch

The January 20th practice will be the last formal practice prior to the EOA competition that is happening on Saturday, January 26th at Camp Fortune.

If you are going directly to Camp Fortune meet at the chalet near the range for 0900 hrs. For those carpooling, meet at Connaught for 0800 hrs. Return to Connaught ~ 1300 hrs as per normal protocol.

I am still looking for one or two more drivers for carpooling. Email me at 2870biathlon@jafspar.ca if you are available to drive.

Currently the weather on Sunday is expected to be snowing with a low of minus 11 and high minus 7. Ensure you dress appropriately. You should not be wearing your ski boots to or from the site. Bring two or three pairs of gloves or mitts. Check out the list of personal gear you should be bringing.

The itinerary for competition day is being finalized but you can check out the EOA competition page for an idea as to what to expect. Important to note is that all competitors will be leaving and returning to Connaught. More details to follow.

For those who are on Facebook please request to join the 2870 RCD RCACC Biathlon group.

Happy New Year!

First of all, I like to wish everyone a Happy New Year for 2013. I hope that the holidays have been fun.

EOA Competition
The EOA competition team has been selected. There are twenty four days (two team practice days) before the competition and the deadline for registration is Thursday, January 3 as per the competition Ops Order. The list can be found on the members page.

Sunday's Practice
There will NOT be an official practice this Sunday as I will be out of town on a Biathlon officials course. All cadets are encouraged to make their way to Camp Fortune if they can to ski the trails up there (at no cost). If you choose to ski the NCC trails in Gatineau Park (including the parkways) keep in mind that you need day passes. Another option is to go to Mooney's Bay and use the trail there. There is a cost value as well ($2.65 per day).

O-Cup/Q-Cup
This year the cadet race will be held on Saturday, January 12 and not on the Sunday as previously announced. It still needs to be determined if we will be able to participate as I have a previous committment. More details to follow in the next couple days.

Connaught Practice
With O-Cup on Saturday, we regain a practice day on Sunday, January 13 from 0800-1200 hrs at Connaught. We will try to get the trails groomed enough to ski them although skiing up to the firing point may not be an option.

Welcome to December

Just a quick reminder that we are at Connaught all morning and not Camp Fortune. Meet you at P4 unless is is really raining. If it is then we'll meet at the drill hall

For those who are doing Wreaths Across Canada and Biathlon let me know first thing in the morning so I know to need to leave early.

Don't forget your poles.

Shortened Practice Sunday

Due to an unexpected but necessary trip out of town Sunday afternoon practice will be shortened by an hour ending at 1100 hrs. Start time will still be 0800 hrs.

We will be meeting at the drill hall but pick up will be at P4 (the pistol ranges for those who aren't familiar with the reference).

E Squadron, Meet Centurion!

Starting this upcoming Sunday 2870 with be teaming up with the sea cadet biathlon team from our sister unit at Connaught, RCSCC CENTURION. I'll be mentoring their new biathlon coach, showing him the ropes and learning the tricks of the trade.

Seventh Season Premier

2870 Biathlon's seventh training season will premier on Sunday, October 23, 2012 at Connaught starting at 0900 hrs.

I really like the analogy I used at the start of the 2011-2011 training season regarding television shows. The start of the season will see familiar faces missing and new members joining the "cast". There are changes afoot this year but I don't like spoilers so you will just need to wait.

Find us on FacebookDon't forget about our Facebook group

I am really looking forward to this training season and looking forward to seeing each and every one of you on Oct 23.
